Easy Holiday Party Appetizer: Apple Pie Dip & Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips!
Nothing beats chips and dip when you’re feeling snack-y. For the holidays, try a sweeter twist on the classic duo: apple pie dip with cinnamon sugar tortilla chips! A lighter, healthier treat to serve as a holiday party appetizer, or a fun after-school snack.
The dip tastes just like sweet, cinnamon-y apple pie filling, except with diced instead of sliced apples. (Sort of like an apple pie salsa!) And, just like in the classic baked pie, your apples will become softer, more fragrant, and even sweeter after simmering.
Then, serve your apple pie dip with cinnamon chips, and you’ve got a lightened-up, deconstructed apple pie! But, I’ve made some simple, healthy substitutions to keep this easy holiday treat more wholesome.
Lighten Up & Lose the Crust: Apple Pie DIP with Cinnamon Chips!
First and foremost, I’ve cut down on the added sugars in this apple pie dip recipe, and used coconut sugar as an unrefined option. You could use a natural no-calorie sweetener like stevia, but I prefer the taste of a real sugar. After all, this apple pie dip is still meant to be a holiday TREAT!
Then, I’ve ditched the delicious-yet-not-so-nutritious pie crust—which is a major source of empty calories and refined carbs in any pie. Instead, I whipped up homemade cinnamon sugar tortilla chips, using 100% whole wheat tortillas! (Or, use gluten free tortillas if needed.)
Homemade cinnamon chips are a light-and-crispy alternative to pie crust, but made with nutritious, fiber-filled whole grains rather than refined grains. Plus, I love the experience of enjoying apple pie as a dippable finger food!
If you’ve never made baked tortilla chips at home, it’s SO simple. And, if you do have some homemade tortilla chip experience, it’s just as easy to make sweet cinnamon tortilla chips!
How to Make Cinnamon Chips with Tortillas
First, you’ll need to cut tortillas into chip shapes. Again, I recommend going with a 100% whole grain tortilla for the most nutritious option! And, it’s best to get the larger ‘burrito size’ (10-inch diameter), so you can cut more shapes out of them for your cinnamon tortilla chips.
Of course, the festive shapes I’ve used are optional. You could also cut your tortillas into triangles, use a circular cookie cutter, or whatever you like. But, holiday cookie cutters can add some fun holiday flare—especially if you’re serving this apple pie dip at a holiday party!
Then, transfer your cut shapes to a wire baking rack on a lined baking sheet. If you don’t have a wire rack, you can try flipping your chips halfway through baking. But, for homemade baked tortilla chips of all kinds, they really turn out crispiest when baked on a wire rack!
Finally, spray down your chips with cooking spray, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, and bake. In just minutes, you’ve got sweet, crispy cinnamon sugar tortilla chips to serve with your apple pie dip—a deconstructed holiday treat that’s hard to beat!
